Powerhorse are more known for there generators which are of the highest quality. I wanted to see if this level of quality is the same in there log splitters, which is why I put together this list of Powerhorse log splitter reviews. What I hope to find out is if there wood splitters are any good, and help inform you. Since log splitters are expensive, having as much information as possible is beneficial.
There are a lot of questions that will need to be answered, before you purchase a log splitter. There are a few questions you need to ask yourself, such as what do you need to split, how big is your budget etc. Then there is learning about the log splitters themselves, and seeing if they will handle your own splitting needs. And why Powerhorse deserve your hard earned….
Why Should You Choose Powerhorse Log Splitters?
Why should you trust a company who is more known for there generators, and cold water pressure washers? I find there is a very simple answer to why you should choose Powerhorse for your splitting needs. For me it’s as simple as that there generators are some of the best on the market. This shows to me that they’re a company who knows how to make a good quality tool. Which is what you want in your splitters.
While they don’t have the big name of some other log splitter manufacturers. There first few log splitters did impress me enough, that made me want to review them. So they do have a pretty good track record in my opinion, just not a well known one. There is one issue that I need to bring up.
Some of there log splitters are made in the USA, and some are made in China. The ones I will be reviewing are the made in China models. This is because the USA models are easily over $2000 for a 20 ton model. Which in my opinion is somewhat over priced for a splitter, which isn’t really better then the models on this list.
Powerhorse 22 Ton Gas Log Splitter Review
Powerhorse Horizontal/Vertical 22 Ton Log Splitter
This Powerhorse log splitter has one of my favorite features of any log splitter. That is it’s vertical splitting capabilities. This is without a doubt one of any log splitters best attributes, so it’s great this model has it. This is because it allows the ability to split larger logs then you normally could. Not to mention you no longer need to lift a heavy log up onto the splitter. So this is really great if you’re unable to do such a thing.
While the manual states it can split logs that are 14 inches in diameter, it can split larger logs. This is even more true if your splitting a nice soft wood. With this machine I was easily able to split logs that were 20 inches in diameter. You can split even larger logs in it’s vertical position. Tho this will take several pass attempts, because of the size of some of the larger logs. The reason they don’t state they can split larger, is generally a warranty issue.
Thankfully you’re able to tow this hydraulic splitter, thanks to it’s 2 inch ball coupler. So if you split far from home, this is another plus for you. Because of it’s high speed 8 inch tires you can tow it up to 45 mph, this is on flat road surfaces. if you tow over more rough surfaces I would highly recommend going slower. I know that’s common sense, but there is a reason “common sense isn’t common” is a saying.
I believe this is a great log splitter for someone who is looking to upgrade to something a bit more heavy duty. Once you start to get to the 22 tons of force level, you’re heading into the higher levels. While far from the most powerful log splitter on the market, it still does the job. If I did have one complaint with this log splitter, it would be it’s wood cradle, I wish it was a bit larger.
What I Like About This Splitter
I’ve turned into a bit of a fan of this log splitter. It is very easy to use, and splits really well. It’s also fairly quick for a hydraulic splitter with a cycle time of roughly 14 or so seconds. It also wasn’t very difficult to start, apart from the usual gas engine issues you have. Tho I said the biggest thing for me is definitely the vertical splitting position. This really helps with those annoying large logs. Even the log cradles I could get use to, just personal preference in having larger ones.

Powerhorse 3-Pt 22 Ton Log Splitter Review
Powerhorse 3-Pt Horizontal/Vertical 22 Ton Log Splitter
It’s not every day I get to use a 3-Pt log splitter, so I was pretty excited to try this machine out. To get the first thing out of the way, will it fit on your tractor? It will work with any 3 pt tracker, that is a category 1 or 2. The next thing is that it doesn’t come with the hoses to connect to the tractor. You will need to get your own, which it requires two 1/2″ hydraulic hoses rated for 3000 PSI with male, 1/2″ NPT threaded ends. I had to say that first and foremost, since I do find it disappointing it doesn’t come with them. But don’t give up on this splitter just yet!
This is one of the best value for money 3 pt log splitters on the market, in my opinion. It’s got a good amount of power, and splits decently quick. I was very easily able to fill up a truck load, in about an hour. It also has the vertical capability which as I stated before am a big fan of. Which I’m surprised isn’t on all 3 pt splitters, it feels like a must for me, so I’m happy that this machine has one.
One thing I really like about this 3 pt splitter is how it’s speed depends on your tractor. So you can let your tractor idle lower if you have more time and not in a rush. Or let it idle high to split faster, when you need it. I found this to be a lot more useful then I was expecting. I didn’t come across any log that it couldn’t get through. I did run some fairly decent 26 inch oak logs through it, and it didn’t bog down for me.
The Downside Of This Splitter
While when you get everything set up, you will have a great mobile splitter. But the lack of included hoses really does hurt this machine. This can add up to 25% in costs for this splitter. So this is something you need to weigh up. Do you try and find a splitter that uses it’s own hydraulics, or this type that uses your tractors. But need to get the right hoses, which can be expensive. This is something that I felt I had to really mention, since it’s not something everyone will even think about.
The Specs
- Engine – Depends On Your Tractor
- Ram Force – 22 Tons
- Max Log Size L x W – 25 x 14 Inches
- Cycle Time – Depends On Your Tractor
- Vertical Splitting – Yes
- Pump – Depends On Your Tractor
How Do Powerhorse Log Splitters Stack Up?
Overall I find both log splitters to be excellent at what they do. They split extremely well and are fairly quick for hydraulic log splitters. While I really like the first log splitter, it’s become one of my personal favorite 22 ton log splitters. The 3 pt splitter really let him down with the lack of included hoses. I imagine this is to keep the cost down, but if I have to go out and buy some pre-made hoses, or worse get some manufactured. This is going to cost more in the long run.
Don’t get me wrong it’s still a great splitter when you have it set up, it’s one of the better 3 pt splitters I’ve used. The extra costs of the hoses really did hurt my overall opinion on the splitter. If you’re more then ready to spend that extra on the hoses, then yes I recommend the splitter. If not I’d look at some other 3 pt models.
Do You Need A 22 Ton Powerhorse Wood Splitter?
The answer to this question can only be answered with what you will be splitting. Will you be splitting hard or soft wood logs? How big are the logs? Are they knotted, or a straight grained log. The answer to these questions will really help in your decision. Figuring out what type of logs you will be splitting is really the key here.
If you’re going to be splitting soft woods like pine or aspen, this splitter will easily split this logs. This is still true even if these logs are quite large in diameter. But if you’re splitting a softer wood, and they are much smaller you might be able to get away with a cheaper smaller electric splitter. This is always an option, and saving money is always one of my big goals, as it is for most people.
If you’re splitting hardwood that is over 10 to 14 inches in diameter, you will need something like these 22 ton log splitters. While sometimes you can split hardwoods that have a nice straight grain with something smaller. You will eventually hit a wall and be unable to split. So having 22 tons of force, in a vertical position will really allow you to split much larger logs. If you want to split larger logs in a non vertical position, you will need something a bit more heavy duty. This will end up costing you more tho.
My Final Thoughts On Powerhorse Wood Splitters
Overall I have come out impressed with what these splitters can do. If it wasn’t for the hose issue, I would be recommending there 3 pt splitter to everyone who needs one. The company as a whole should be proud of themselves, for making some seriously good splitters. They make some great value for money splitters, that will help with most of your splitting needs.
